Tomb Raider II was one my favorite games on the playstation. I spent countless hours and never beat it. I dabbled in the other edition but it wasn't until this game came out that I decided to pick it back up and see what it was like again. I expected puzzles, I expected confusion, I even expected to be startled once or twice, but does the game live up to my nostalgic hype and stay true to the orginals?
Full Review and Conclusion
I decided to judge this game based on Gameplay: How fun was the game, how does it compare to the originals, Graphics: Is it visually appealing, and Stability: How well does it play? I will rate each topic and speak on why I rated it that way. Let's begin...
That is a pretty low rating in my book. It's not unplayable but I was pretty unsatified with the gameplay. Let's start with Quicktime Events. I hate them, but that's a personal opinion. The quicktime events were not enjoyable for me personally and coupled with the fact that you didn't know when to expect them and often the game would give you control during a cutscene and you were dead before realizing it.
This installement of Tomb Raider did not feel like the orginal Tomb Raiders. Lara did not feel like or even look similar to the Lara we all know. This Lara was blood thirsty, there was way to much combat to feel like a Tomb Raider. The game still had plenty of puzzles but overall it felt like a shooter.
The best parts where transversing the terrain. The running, climbing, jumping, hanging, shimming, these were the parts that felt like Tomb Raider and these were the parts I enjoyed the most, I just wish there was more of this and less combat. I am also upset that I was never chased by a boulder.
I thought the graphics were great. I had no issues here. Everything looked very satisfying and I did not notice any graphical glitches or issues. So I rated this about as good as it gets other than just being blown away by something revolutionary.
Not a whole lot to say here. The game performed excellent. I had no bugs, no glitches, no crashes. Everything ran very smooth.
This is a pretty sad overall rating. Unfortunately the graphics and stability are not enough to save this game. I was overall disappointed. The story did not capture me. I was not a fan of quicktime events. I was not a fan of the constant combat. I wanted more puzzles, traps, and terrain transversing. I was pretty let down by this game and was rushing to the end just to get it over with. I would not recommend this game to anyone, even a Tomb Raider fan. This is a thumbs down and a pass.
